While I understand your comment and do understand there are some that still use older computers with IE6 (http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_explorer.asp) the fact is that Windows 98 is at least 14 years old. If people are still using computers that are 14 years old then it is beyond time to update. Everyday I see computers for sale that happily run Windows XP for under $100 for sale, so there really is no excuse for not updating to something a little newer. Sheesh even Windows XP is what? 8 or 9 years old? They can also keep their existing PC if they must and use Firefox 3 if they want which is still better than IE6.

For the small number of users that do use IE6 it is simply not worth the web developers time to commit significant time to develop also for IE6, it would be far easier for them to use another web browser than us continue to cater for IE6.

I understand how hard it is to make a website with IE6. However, if many websites end support for IE6 then people who use older operating systems will not be able to upgrade to a more recent version of Internet Explorer. For example Windows 98 does not support IE7 so they will have a hard time viewing websites.

I found this by accident -but- I will blatantly advertise it on my site. I use Linux most of the time -but- I run various forms of Windows inside VMware. I am still a Homesite hang on and I was using Win2k as the base for my Homesite operations. Been doing it for years and having ALL the troubles with IE6. Now I am trying to bring myself and my site up to “Good CSS and XHTML” etc… Homesite like most of the other HTML editors, uses the default Browser. In my case with Win2K was/is IE6. Found some really good Templates out on the Web. One in particular I wanted to setup for my Lord’s Page. Don’t think my current one is all that great. The big problem I ran into here was PNG. Seems that IE6 doesn’t understand them. Then I found that IE7 won’t work in Win2K. Ouch!! So, I decided that my IE6 efforts must retire and I must move to Win7… and IE8. In all my Web searching I found this site and I will be putting it in my “New” pages, some of which will look just like the old … but updated. Thanks for this and I may expand on it. I’m still partial to Firefox so I will probably change the recommendation. I am also working with the writer of a fine Sitemap Geneartor and I am recommending this site to him. It can be found at:

He also complains about IE6 and I do believe it is mainly cause he is using PNG to draw the connecting lines. It is some really slick CSS. You all might want to check it out just for that.
Oh, and to any newbies -or- old absent minded farts like me, don’t make the same mistake I made. The file I initially tested this with has a:

at the top. I placed the IE6 check code ‘before’ it. Then spent a couple of hours trying to figure out why it didn’t work. Just as I was about to complain the light went on… I moved it below that one line and it worked flawlessly!! Position can be … and is … important.

While I agree and prefer Firefox myself, I have at times had issues with Firefox, even the latest 3.6. In fact I have some sites I use Google Chrome for because Firefox is too damn slow, e.g. Zazzle. Internet Explorer is as we know not standards compliant, however it has improved greatly and if a persons wants to and prefers IE, then at least use IE8

I disagree on the fact that IE8 is by any standards a good browser, in fact i’d go as far as saying none of the IE were any good… sorry to offend anyone.

I’d recommend Firefox, reasons? Faster and more Secure Firefox 3.6 is out now go get it lol

I have tried IE8 a number of times but simply cannot get use to the way it works, I still find Firefox far better, but that is more of a personal opinion.

Internet Explorer 8 is really good. This browser is very very stable and i have been using it for quite a while without blue screens or crashes.

(And I’d add Opera to that list too.)
